A city car with zip, the Mini electric is good at a few things
In August 2020, thanks to MINI Toronto, we took a test-drive in the all-electric MINI Cooper SE 3-door, Canada's most affordable electric vehicle for sale as of August 2020. (MSRP C$44,990 for the mid-range Premier line we drove.)
Our big question was: who is this for? It's not for families with kids older than elementary- aged - this is a tiny car. The trunk can fit several bags of groceries but doesn't fit a hockey bag.
It's not for road-trippers looking to get out of the city. If you left with a full battery, you'd need to stop to charge up about an hour and a half after starting.
It is for young urban professional single people living in an apartment building downtown. This car is small enough to get in and out of small spaces. It is zippy to drive in the city and gets its best range in stop-and-go traffic. It has enough range to cover most commutes comfortably. Its small battery can charge pretty well overnight with nothing more than an extension cord; its bigger-battery peers definitely need a rapid charger.
So if you want the fun of a mini, and the magic of an electric vehicle, the electric MINI might be for you.
